Green Initiatives from Pozzani
We are a modern thriving company based in rural Lincolnshire, and as responsibile manufacturers and employers we are facing up to the challenges that face modern businesses with regards to climate change. We believe our plumbed in products already represent a greener option than buying disposable bottles (see the article on the right), however, we still feel there is room for improvement.
Our focus for 2008 is as folows:
Making a recyclable IX series cartridge
We currently supply hundreds of cartridges for our ever popular IX250 system every week. At substantial cost we are tooling new cartridges (fitting the existing housing) which will separate when being discarded into the invidually recycalable components. This means the bulk of the cartridge will go into your recycling bin as opposed to the general waste bin.
Product Packaging Review
We are presently reviewing all of our product packaging - where possible avoiding plastics, and when necessary keeping these to the minimum required to serve their purpose. We actively recycle all inward packaging that comes into our building, and scrap papers are securely shredded into fine waste for use as packing filler.
Computing and Administration
A simple initiative we are promoting in our offices to shut down appliances, computers and other devices at the end of working shifts where possible. We are implementing systems to reduce the dependency on hard copy paperwork, and are setting targets to reduce our output paperwork through 2008/2009. Where possible any electrical equipment reaching the end of it's life is sold on to someone who may find it useful, or recycled in accordance with WEEE regulations.
Water and Energy Conservation
Our research and development team is currently working on improving water conservation on commercial technologies such as Reverse Osmosis to improve recovery rates. Reducing water consumption and producing industrial plant with lower power usage helps industrial firms requiring such processes improve their own green credentials too!

Bottled Water vs. Drinking Water
An average family relying on bottled water for drinking consume, on average, approximately 2000 litres per annum equating to roughly 700 plastic bottles of varying sizes. These bottles even in todays modern world of recycling typically will end up in a landfill, and even bottles which are recovered present environmental challenges themselves - since the production of new plastics from old is certainly not carbon free itself.
Virtually every home in the UK has a safe drinking water supply. Fact.
That might sound like a bizarre statement for a water treatment firm but it is true - the vast majority of mains water is considered by and large to be safe to drink, although much of what it contains (such as Chlorine) serves no purpose in terms of consumption (i.e. by the time the water comes out of your tap the Chlorine has done it's job in keeping the water sterile during transport). Bottled water, however, represents a choice for the consumer in that people that choose not to drink tap water because of particular health concerns, or because they do not like the taste.
Few people drinking bottled water consider the true environmental aspects of it's consumption
Very few people realise that a substantial proportion of bottled water is just mains water that has been filtered, and even more fail to realise that the filtration technology required to produce such water is relatively inexpensive. A fully plumbed in water filter system from Pozzani starts from just £54 with all necessary fittings and the initial cartridge.
Thats a first year cost (including the second filter six months down the line) of just £66.75 or £5.50 per month AND the only waste produced is that of two cartridges representing a substantially lower amount of waste than 700 plus bottles AND the carbon footprint in their production is probably less than 1% of that needed to make so many bottles. Working out bottled water at a conservative 40p per litre, you'd also save £750 per annum on your shopping bill!

Long Term Focus and Green Initiatives
Pozzani are only a small company with 15 employees, however, our commitment to helping the environment will be reviewed year on year and we will maintain a focus on trying to do better. We believe our products offer a better and less wasteful solution than alternative options, and even then we are committed to improving our own solutions even further to minimise the environmental impact.
Carbon trading, offsetting and emissions are virtually impossible to quantify on any product - and even if you can the associated elements involved in the marketing, retailing and delivery of such products are often forgotten. Our focus is trying to keep things simple working on good business procedures to try and make whatever difference we can.
We are not perfect, probably no UK organisation is. However, we are always happy to hear from our customers so if you have any ideas on what more we can do we are only too happy to listen!
