Rainwater harvesting is becoming increasingly more popular in the UK. As the cost of mains water rises, many people are turning to the (sometimes abundant) natural supply that we seem to get from the heavens as being a viable alternative to meet all or some of their houses requirements.
Contrary to popular belief, rainwater isn't actually entirely pure - it's pretty close, and vastly better than say river water, but it will pickup carbon dioxide (acid rain), heavy metals (from industrial smoke etc) and airborne bacteria and dust particles. It is accepted though that it is pretty clean and has no real mineral content(which is derived from passing over rocks in the earths crust).
Rainwater harvesting relies on a tank which is fed through downpipes - so whilst the quality of rain may well be very good, you will unfortunately contaminate the water with organic matter, bacteria and dirt from the surfaces of your roof and the pipes themselves. This makes it an unsafe source for drinking once stored without further treatment.
Therefore you require at least five key pieces of equipment to setup a rainwater harvesting system for a whole house supply:
- Storage tank
Usually buried underground in your garden out of site with a service hatch for maintenance. A typical tank will range from 2500 to 5000 litres depending on the level/amount of rainfall and water consumption.
- Water Pump
A pump to get the water from the tank to your house under pressue i.e. suitable enough to power a shower on the first floor for example.
- Sediment Filtration
A filter to remove small particulate matter from the water before it enters your house.
- Carbon Filtration
Basically a carbon taste/odour filter to polish off any organic 'musty' taste from the water. This can be installed whole house or at point of use, depending on requirements.
- UV System
A method of disinfection where water is subjected to UV light, killing off any living organisms (i.e. harmful pathogens), ensuring the water is safe to drink.
- Drinking Water
It is heavily recommended that an RO system is used to purify the water used for drinking. This is to cover the eventuality that you might get chemical contamination on your roofline, guttering or the storage tank which would require a system such as this to remove.
One thing we've discovered is that it is virtually impossible to set out 'set kits' for rainwater harvesting. Each job usually requires a bit of planning specific to the actual installation, however, as a guide we generally expect to be able to offer an Aquada 2 UV system (Proxima version with lamp failiure alarm), sediment and carbon filters, and a RO system for about £950 including VAT and delivery.
This leaves just the pump/tank to sort. These can change greatly depending on the specification of the system (i.e. the size of the property and expected water usage), however, we are happy to supply further details on request.
